From Solar to Standby: The Nomic Power Story
When brothers Cody and Dylan Stephens launched Nomic Power Solutions in Austin, Texas, they didn’t set out to become one of the region’s fastest-growing residential generator companies. In fact, their original plan was solar. But what began as a pivot quickly turned into a mission: deliver reliable backup power to homeowners through a consultative, customer-first approach.
A Surprising Beginning
Cody’s background wasn’t in electrical work—it was in sales. After running a nationwide chain of supplement stores, he was looking for his next challenge. Meanwhile, Dylan had years of construction management experience after serving in the military. Their father, a seasoned tradesman who transitioned into the solar industry, encouraged them to explore energy solutions.
Initially, solar seemed promising. But as they dug deeper, the brothers discovered major obstacles: high financing costs, unpredictable margins, and customer skepticism. Generators, on the other hand, provided a clear value. Texas homeowners knew the pain of extended outages, and demand for standby power was skyrocketing.
So the Stephens brothers shifted course—and Nomic Power was born.
Why Residential Only
While many dealers chase commercial jobs, Nomic chose to focus exclusively on homeowners. Residential projects allowed them to learn fast, refine their systems, and build an impeccable reputation. As Cody explained, “Commercial is a whole other level of expertise. For us, residential was the best place to start and perfect our craft.”
By specializing, they developed a consultative sales model that homeowners appreciate. Instead of high-pressure tactics, Nomic takes time to understand how a client wants their home to function during an outage. From there, they recommend the right generator size, location, and installation plan.
Spotting the Right Customers
Not every job is the right fit—and Cody has learned to say no. Early on, Nomic discovered that some clients with unrealistic expectations ended up costing more in stress, profit, and even reputation. Today, Cody and his team pay close attention to red flags during the sales process, especially when it comes to persistent price negotiations.
“It’s not about being the cheapest,” Cody said. “It’s about finding the right clients who value our process and trust us to do the job right.”
Culture Over Everything
One of Nomic’s biggest strengths is its culture. The team shares what Cody calls the “give-a-factor”—employees genuinely care about doing things right. From master electricians to young apprentices, everyone buys into the mission of powering homes with integrity and professionalism.
That culture shows up in the little things, like enthusiastically adopting new systems or posting project photos without being asked. It’s proof that Nomic isn’t just building generators—they’re building a team invested in the company’s success.
The Power of Maintenance
While installs fuel growth, maintenance keeps the business strong year-round. Nomic offers service plans that include proactive monitoring, giving homeowners peace of mind and creating predictable recurring revenue.
“Installs can be up and down,” Cody explained. “But service and maintenance are scalable and sustainable. That’s what pays the bills and builds long-term value.”
Looking Ahead
Nomic’s vision is bold: dominate Austin, then expand into surrounding markets with a satellite model. Cody imagines taking top-performing employees, giving them skin in the game, and launching “mini-Nomics” in nearby cities. It’s a strategy inspired by his earlier experience scaling Five Star Nutrition, where talented managers helped open dozens of new locations.
At its core, Nomic Power’s story is about more than generators. It’s about grit, learning by doing, and building a company rooted in trust and respect—for customers, employees, and the community.
As Cody put it best: “We’re not just installing generators. We’re building relationships that last.”
